The Management Plan
The Management Plan is the document that describes the UNESCO site in terms of its standing as World Heritage. It outlines the tools and actions used to protect the site, the planned activities aimed at developing it and making it accessible to all, and the monitoring system in place to track its status.
Since 2002, the World Heritage Centre has required this document for all sites in the World Heritage List, in line with the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The first Management Plan for the “Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany” was created during the site’s nomination process, which culminated in its inclusion on the list in 2013. In 2024, an updated Management Plan was approved, based on an in-depth analysis of the current situation. The new plan includes a 30-project Action Plan, to be developed in the coming years, across four thematic areas: conservation, development, universal accessibility, and integrated communication. Two additional cross-cutting areas — governance and monitoring — are also included.
The central theme of the Plan is the preservation of the site’s Outstanding Universal Value, which qualifies it as part of humanity’s heritage. This commitment involves all public and private entities, with the aim of passing on this value intact to future generations.
Community participation is therefore essential for the Management Plan to be shared and implemented, and for this important heritage to be both known and protected.
