Mugello between art and nature
Lake Bilancino is only steps away from the Medici villas
Villas included: Villa del Trebbio and Villa di Cafaggiolo
This itinerary offers you the chance to get to know Lake Bilancino, which attracts art, sport and nature lovers to the Mugello.
The Mugello lives up to the expectations of anyone who loves spending their free time in the great outdoors, trekking or walking. The beauty of the landscape and the number of walks available, varying in difficulty and length, means it’s difficult to choose.
This itinerary will bring you to Lake Bilancino from Villa di Cafaggiolo or Villa del Trebbio. The artificial lake, created approximately 20 years ago by the construction of a dam on the Sieve River, offers plenty of opportunities to walk by the water with fantastic views over the surrounding hills and countryside. During the hottest months, you can see the vast sunflower fields while throughout the year you can see chestnut tree forests and fields full of grazing cows.
For sporty types there are many cycling, horseback and walking routes as well as water-based activities during the summer months when free and equipped beaches are open for those who want to swim, rent sail boats or canoes.
Similarly, for those who love to fish, the lake’s clear water has many different species. On some banks, you can fish when accompanied by licensed fishermen and in possession of a special daily access permit or an annual card issued by the management, which must be presented to the supervisory staff together with the fishing license itself and an identity document.

This small sanctuary was created to preserve a humid habitat for the distinct lake fauna and the hundreds of aquatic birds that stay during migratory seasons. Activities include bird-watching in 5 purpose-built huts, but also an educational programme for all ages, a picnic area, and plenty of green spaces for children to play in.
